How a logistics company turned an AI-built internal tool into a $40K/month product.
An operations manager built a dispatch tool with AI coding tools, and soon the whole company ran on it. When customers asked to buy it, Skillfi's fractional CTO made it secure, multi-customer and billable, then launched it with a small product team. It's how our fractional CTO service works: senior technical leadership, exactly when you need it.
A tool everyone loved, built for one company only.
Frustrated with spreadsheets, the company's operations manager used AI coding tools to build a dispatch app over a few weekends. Within months, 60 dispatchers ran every load through it and dispatch time fell by a third.
Partner carriers and shippers saw it and asked to buy it. But the app was built for one company: one shared database, no proper logins or user roles, no billing, no backups, and it ran on the manager's personal cloud account. Nobody on staff could safely change the code, and one bad update could stop the whole business.
Customers were asking to pay us for it, and I was scared to touch a single line of code.
Head of Operations, client
Keep what works, fix what's risky, then build the product around it.
Our fractional CTO chose to strengthen the existing app rather than start over, so dispatchers never lost a day. Pricing and the launch plan were shaped with fractional GTM support.
From personal project to safe system
A full code and security audit, the app moved to company-owned hosting, secrets removed from the code, plus backups, monitoring and tests on the critical flows.
Many customers, one platform
Rebuilt so each customer's data is fully separate, with company logins, user roles, subscription billing and a self-service onboarding flow.
A small team to run it
A product manager and three developers hired, the operations manager made product lead, and code review in place so AI-written code is checked before it ships.
8 months, step by step
From a single-company tool to a product with paying customers. Here's how the engagement unfolded.
